UK driver training innovation for VTEC

Transportation | April 2018

At the end of 2017, CORYS delivered 4 new replica Azuma train simulators to Virgin Trains East Coast (VTEC) ahead of the train entering passenger service in 2018. The supply of the latest CORYS driver training innovations provides VTEC with a blended learning solution:

  • Laptop simulators connected to large touch screens provide interactive classroom training where the complete Azuma simulation can be run show specific learning objectives  to groups of drivers
  • SODA (Simulation On DemAnd) simulators provide a tablet application of the complete Azuma simulation where drivers can learn at their own pace or in a group through a guided mode
  • TACTIS touch screen tablet instructor station enables the instructor to control the simulation beside the trainee that will provide valuable support during the Azuma traction conversion training

The VTEC project also includes the complete simulation of ERTMS level 2 baseline 3 enabling VTEC to train their drivers in the new signalling and communication system ahead of the national ERTMS deployment.

Paul Boyle, ERTMS manager at VTEC, said “The results of the Project are quite simply outstanding: all of our drivers who have used the new upgraded facilities think they are fantastic and now feel part of something really special at Virgin Trains.”
