Petrobras Elevates Refinery Training with Innovative Digital Simulation from CORYS

Petrobras has taken a bold step in digital transformation by selecting CORYS to deliver an advanced Operator Training Simulator (OTS) platform as a Software as a Service (SaaS). This cutting-edge solution, powered by INDISS PLUS®, is set to train over 5,000 refinery operators annually—marking a major milestone in scalable workforce training across the refining industry.

Simulation-Based Training for Real-World Results

At the core of the project is a highly realistic simulation environment that replicates key typical refinery units, including atmospheric and vacuum distillation, catalytic cracking, delayed coking, diesel hydroprocessing, and hydrogen generation. Operators can now train in dynamic, real-time scenarios that mirror live plant conditions, enhancing situational awareness, operational safety, and decision-making skills.

The solution also includes critical utility systems like boilers, furnaces, and turbogenerators—ensuring comprehensive coverage of refinery operations.

Massification at Scale: 70,000 Hours of Training Annually

With support for up to 24 trainees and 6 instructors per session, the cloud-based SaaS platform enables mass training without sacrificing interactivity or quality. Designed for scalability, the system can deliver up to 70,000 training hours per year—boosting operator competency across all Petrobras facilities while reducing the need for in-plant training.

Driving Efficiency, Safety, and Measurable Outcomes

Using dynamic process simulation, the system introduces disturbances to test operator responses to real-life challenges. Integrated assessment tools track performance and progress, empowering Petrobras to personalize future training and ensure sustained excellence in operations. This proactive approach helps minimize downtime, enhance process safety, and increase overall plant efficiency.

Armando Nunes Coelho Junior, Contract Manager at Petrobras said:

“Petrobras Refining has been using CORYS dynamic simulation solutions for more than 15 years at some refineries. We are pleased to renew our confidence in CORYS as a trusted partner to support the expansion of the solution for all the refineries.”

By embracing scalable, simulation-based training, Petrobras not only prepares its workforce for today’s complex challenges but also builds a resilient, agile foundation for the future.
